How do I report a problem with access to an item in my Reading List? Last Updated: 31.Jul.2025 Views: 100
If an item you are trying to access online via your module reading list within Canvas is not working, you can report it as a broken resource and the Library will investigate for you. Anything that has a 'View online' link can be reported.
On rare occasions you may come across items that have no availability at all - perhaps because our previous access has expired or the print copy book is no longer on the Library system. These can be reported too.
Please note that this advice applies only to items being accessed through the Reading Lists that appear in your main Canvas module menus. If you are having a problem accessing something that appears elsewhere, for example on the Library catalogue, or if all the print copies of a book show as lost or missing, please contact the Library directly.
If something in your Reading List has a 'View online' link that is not working for you, it can be reported to the Library using the 'Mark as broken' option on the citation's full reading list record. Follow these steps:
- Hover over the item that you want to report in your list until you see the 'Full details' link appear. Click on it.
- This will open up the full details screen for the item. Hover over the contents in the 'Links & availability' > 'View online' section and the "Mark as broken" option should appear on the right hand side for you to click on. If there is more than one provider for the full text, they will be listed separately. In this example there is only one provider (VitalSource).
- You will then be prompted to give more information about the problem you are experiencing by entering text into the box. Please be as detailed as possible - for example whether you are using a PC/laptop or a mobile device or the Canvas app - and what happens when you try to open the link. It can be really helpful here if you could copy and paste the text of any specific error messages you are seeing as that will help us diagnose the issue.
- Finally, click on 'Confirm' to submit the report and an alert will be sent to the Library team for us to investigate.
- We will get in touch with you once the issue is resolved, or to update you if the problem may take longer to sort out. This is usually via your University outlook email address.
If something in your Reading List isn't available at all, there will be a 'Report missing links' option in the citation's full reading list record. Follow these steps:
- Hover over the item that you want to report in your list until you see the 'Full details' link appear. Click on it.
- This will open up the full details screen for the item. It should automatically open on the 'Links & availability' screen. Click on the "Report missing links" option near the bottom.
- You will then be prompted to give some information about the problem (the same text box as shown in step 3 in the broken links example). As there is no access to the item in print or online, you don't need to say much - just that the item is not available.
- Finally, click on 'Confirm' to submit the report and an alert will be sent to the Library team for us to investigate.
- We will get in touch with you once the issue is resolved, or to update you if the problem may take longer to sort out. This is usually via your University outlook email address.
