The book I want says "Not Available" on the library catalogue, what does that mean?
Last Updated: 30.Sep.2022 Views: 230

Any physical item on the LibrarySearch catalogue with the status 'not available' means that it is currently not available for you to borrow immediately. This can be for several reasons but the most common is that the book is already on loan to someone else.

  • The catalogue may just say 'Not Available' or may show you more information, such as 'Not Available - On Loan'. Wording will vary, depending on the reason the book is not available.
  • If the status says anything other than 'on loan' it may not be possible for you to borrow the book at all, for example it may be missing/lost or still on order with our book suppliers.
  • Please contact the Library if you have any questions about the availability of a specific item and we will be able to advise.

How will I know when the book WILL be available?

If you click into the record - on the title or where it says Not Available - you will be able to see the date the item is due for return to the Library. For example, the below image shows that the Harrison Library has 3 copies of a book. All of them say they are on loan until the 7th September 2020.

As the library uses automatic renewals, the due date on the catalogue will usually keep extending daily. We have no way to know when someone will decide to return a book they have borrowed, so if you want the book you will need to request it in order for it to stop renewing and get it returned for you. The person with the book will then receive a recall notification and it will be up to them to return the book by the due date. Please see the below FAQs about our Requests, Recalls and Renewing processes for more information.
