Academics - can I obtain preview copies of e-textbooks?

The short answer is maybe - it depends whether the book in question is already on the Kortext platform.

When putting together their module resources, it can be useful for academics to have access to a book in order to confirm its suitability for their teaching needs. If Kortext already have the title in question on their system, you should be able to order a desk copy which can be used for a limited period of time.

  1. To do this, please log directly into your Kortext account at https://www.kortext.com/, then under the 'Inventory' menu option choose 'Search Kortext'.

  1. You will be presented with a search box to type in the book title, author and/or ISBN.

  1. Choose 'Read now' to open the book immediately, or 'Add to your books' to put it on your Kortext bookshelf.

Either option will grant you access to an inspection copy for consultation purposes. The length of time you will be permitted to access this copy is set by the publishers, but is typically 1 to 3 months.

To open the book from your Kortext bookshelf, go to the 'My Library' option in the Kortext menu. This will display all the books you have opened or are linked to your module(s), along with the expiry dates and whether they are an 'inspection copy' or not.

How do I add the inspection copy book to my module?

If you feel the book would be suitable for your module(s), add it as a new citation to the relevant Leganto reading list(s) - remember to click the 'Send List' button to submit the list to the library so that the item can be purchased. If you need any help with this, contact the Leganto team on leganto@wlv.ac.uk.

What if I see an error message when trying to order my desk copy?

Sometimes Kortext are aware of a title and include it in their search results before they have obtained and licenced it from the publisher. In such an instance, the desk copy facility will be enabled once the book is fully in place.
