Why can I only see the first page of a digitised book chapter or article in my reading list? Last Updated: 05.Mar.2025 Views: 180
Sometimes items with a 'View online' link in your Reading List menu in Canvas will be book chapters or journal articles that the Library has had to get digitised just for your course.
You will not be able to find the same item via our general Library resources, so using your Reading List in Canvas to access it is key.
If you are having a problem reading a digitised item please see the information below.
How will I know that I am using a digitised item?
These items always have a copyright declaration as the cover page, so they will look very similar to this:
I can see that first page/copyright page, but not the rest of the article?
- If you are using the Canvas app, please try using web Canvas instead.
- Look for the page turning options as shown further down in this FAQ.
- If the options are not visible or do not work:
- Check the zoom level on your internet browser, if it is too high the page options can be hidden.
- Try a different internet browser. Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox are the least glitchy, we have had problems reported by Safari and Edge users.
- If the problem persists, please report the item as broken using the option in the reading list entry (see linked FAQ for more information on this).
How do I move the page on if I am using the web version of Canvas?
There are three options to turn the page:
1. The page slider at the bottom left - click on the purple dot with your mouse and drag it
2. The page number at the bottom right - type in the page you would like to go to
3. The left and right arrows at the bottom right - click on the arrow to turn the page
How do I move the page on if I am using the Canvas app on an apple device?
There are two ways to do this:
- Tap in the middle of the page and the document options should appear at the top and bottom. Similar to options 1. and 2. above, there is a slider option and page number box you can type in. Use the option you prefer.
- Press on the right-hand edge of the page and it will automatically load the next page; you can cycle through the pages using the left and right-hand edges.
The document opens in Kortext but I can't login. Why can't I access all the Kortext features?
We use the Copyright Licencing Agency (CLA) to provide our digitised files. The CLA currently use the Kortext reader to host their files, but this is just a basic form of the Kortext platform so you can read, print, and download the PDF. The University does not have an account with Kortext so you will NOT be able to login and access the full range of Kortext features such as read aloud and annotations.
If you want to know more about this please have a look at the web page written by the CLA to help students use the reader: https://cla.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/4402284332561-Using-the-Advanced-Student-Reader
