Academic staff - why does the 'student view' option in Canvas display an error for the reading list?

The Student View option in Canvas itself is not compatible with the reading list software and it cannot provide you with a preview of how your students will see the list.

This is because:

  • the list is embedded into Canvas and connects to the reading list software each time you click on it, instead of being an actual static Canvas page or item.

  • in order to show the list only to those students enrolled on the module, the reading list software looks for their student number, which is part of the account information provided when students login to Canvas. Members of staff don't have a student number/will be logged into Canvas with their staff account - so when the system looks for the student number and can't find one, the list display process fails.

If you try to use the 'student view' option this is the error message it will probably display: "Reading List can't be loaded in the Canvas Student preview. To check the list is working as expected, please see this FAQ from the University Library" [this is the FAQ you are reading now]


How can I view the list as a student to check they should be able to see it?

  1. Go to the full web version of Leganto and find the list you want to check. Click on the ... ellipsis menu at the top to open the "List menu":

  1. One of the options will be 'View list as a student':

 

  1. The preview will look like this, with a purple banner across the top confirming it is the Student View - to close it again, click on 'Back to instructor view':

 

This process can also be done if you are viewing the list inside Canvas - click on the same ellipsis menu as shown in step 1 and the same  'View list as a student' option should appear.


The list looks fine to me, but students are reporting issues?

If you contact us on behalf of a student please can you provide the details of the exact error they are seeing, preferably a screen shot from their own device. This is because what staff see may not always be the same as what a student does.
