Is there something I can use to do my referencing for me?

No sorry, there is nothing that will 'do' your referencing for you. It is a skill you are expected to develop while studying at the University.

Take a look below at some of the support we offer that will help you with your referencing.

Please note: the Library occasionally gets asked about online reference generators such as Cite This For Me or RefMe. These tools do not always follow the exact guidance in use at the University and are therefore best avoided because you could end up losing marks unnecessarily by not having the correct punctuation and elements of the reference in place. Use the resources below instead.

Cite Them Right Online

This online guide not only helps you to understand the basics of referencing, but also contains hundreds of fully worked citation and reference examples from a wide range of referencing styles (including Cite Them Right Harvard, the University's preferred referencing style). The worked examples in CTR have a "You try" box on each page, so you can copy in the information you have for a source and it will help you to write the reference ready to copy into your work.

Access the Cite Them Right (Online Guide). If prompted to login, choose your institution, then enter your standard IT username and password. Please see the linked FAQ below for further information if you have problems logging in.

Referencing Management – RefWorks

RefWorks is a web-based reference management system that allows you to collect references from a range of online sources, manage and organise your reference library, and import your references into Word using ‘Write-N-Cite’ or Refworks Citation Manager. It can also create a bibliography. However, you still need to know the referencing rules of the style you use to be able to spot any errors made by the software.

RefWorks is available to all staff and students.

Please see the linked FAQ below for further details about creating an account and using RefWorks.

Workshops

Skills for Learning run a regular programme of workshops that will help support your understanding of referencing and reference management.

You can book on to Harvard Referencing and RefWorks workshops via the workshops webpage.
