Do I need to create a VitalSource account?

In short, no!

In fact, it is important that you do NOT create your own account - even with your University email address - because this will not be able to link to the books the Library provides access to. In the worst cases, creating an account will corrupt your existing Bookshelf and you will not be able to access any of the books you previously opened.

How do I get an account then?

The way the University Library access to VitalSource works is:

  • The very first time you click to open a VitalSource book via your Reading List menu in Canvas, or via the record for the book in the LibrarySearch catalogue, it will automatically create an account for you. You just need to tick the box to accept the Ts & Cs.
  • You will not know what the password is because it is NOT the same as your generic University Microsoft account one. This means you will not be able to login directly to any VitalSource 'Sign In' prompts. Avoid the sign in prompt by always using the link to your books via your reading list and/or the LibrarySearch catalogue as you will be automatically logged in that way, or download their Bookshelf app.
