How can I check what access the Library has to a journal?

The easiest way is to search LibrarySearch the library catalogue by typing in either the Journal Title or its ISSN number. If we have the Journal as part of our collections, the search results will indicate its precise availability - including whether we have it online or as a print copy on the library shelves - as well as detailing which dates are covered by our holdings.

  • Each format may have a different entry on the catalogue: print is indicated by a physical Library location such as Harrison, Walsall or Hutchison Library and the number (or Dewey Decimal classmark) of where to find it on the shelf in the Library's Periodical Collection section; online is indicated by the words 'Available Online'.
  • To see the full details of the access the Library has, click the title link to open the catalogue record and scroll down to the 'View Online' section or 'Find in Library' section. This is important because the year(s)/volume/issue the Library subscribes to may be limited. Our examples use Nursing Times as the Journal Title we have searched for.

  • Online - the image below shows there is full online access to Nursing Times from 2000 to the current issue via the 'Single Journals' link. The other three links for 'EBSCOhost CINAHL Ultimate', 'Journals@Ovid Complete' and 'Nursing & Allied Health Database' all show additional access on various platforms, each of which covers a different date range.

  • Print - the images below show there are some print copies of Nursing Times in two of our campus Libraries. You will need to click on the entry for each specific Library to see the detailed information about year/volume/issue availability. For example, Harrison Library has copies from 1998 vol.94 to 2016 vol.112 only. Please note that print Journals are not for loan so you will need to visit the Library where they are held to read them.
