Cite Them Right has some good examples for how to reference pictures or images that you have found online:

  1. Photographs from the internet (login required) - for pictures you have found on general webpage:
  • Photographer or username
  • Year of publication (in round brackets)
  • Title of photograph (in italics)
  • Available at: URL (Accessed: date)

Example: Kitto, J. (2013) Golden sunset. Available at: http://www.jameskitto.co.uk/photo_1827786.html (Accessed: 14 June 2018).

  1. Photographs in online collections (login required) - for pictures found on sites such as Flickr, Instagram or Pinterest:
  • Photographer or username (if available)
  • Year of publication (in round brackets)
  • Title of photograph/video (or collection) (in italics)
  • Available at: DOI or URL (Accessed: date)

Example: stanitsa_dance (2021) Cossack dance ensemble. Available at: https://www.instagram.com/p/COI_slphWJ_/ (Accessed: 13 June 2021).

Things to be aware of when referencing pictures:

  • For images found via search engines such as Google or Bing, it is important that you reference the original source webpage rather than the search results screen. If you click on the image, you will be offered the option of viewing the image on its original page/location. By clicking the link, you will be taken to the site hosting the image and you should then use that URL for your reference.
  • Cite Them Right will ask for the photographer as effectively the author of the picture - if you can't find someone's surname and initials, they may have a username instead.
  • If there is no name at all, use the title of the image as the first part of your reference by following the example for 'Images with no creator (Harvard)' in CTR (login required):

Template: Title (Year) Available at: DOI or URL (Accessed: date)

Example: Kernewek Lowender – Copper Coast Cornish festival (2021) Available at: https://www.facebook.com/kernewekcc/photos/a.539234689495962/4033810613371668 (Accessed: 13 June 2021).
